    About the Guide

    What this guide is

This is an independent editorial guide to Crete. It documents the island as a cultural system and a practical place to visit—its landscapes, rhythms, travel decisions, and the places that have earned attention through time.

The guide prioritizes continuity over novelty, judgment over coverage, and usefulness over volume. Some pages are reflective; others are practical planning guides. Both follow the same standard: they must help a reader understand Crete more clearly.

    What this guide is not

This is not a directory. It is not a review platform. It is not a booking site, and it is not a publication driven by crowdsourced opinion or influencer recommendation.

Some pages may include clearly disclosed commercial links where they are useful to the traveler. Those links do not determine what appears in the guide, how places are described, or whether a recommendation is made. Coverage is limited by editorial judgment, not by commercial availability.

    How entries are written

Places are visited personally—often more than once, across different seasons. Entries are written with repetition in mind: whether a place sustains interest over time, whether it holds its character under return visits.

Selection is limited by design. Removal may occur without explanation if standards change or if a place no longer meets the criteria that earned its original inclusion.

Absence from this guide is not judgment. Inclusion is not endorsement beyond the specific context in which an entry is written.

    Time and editions

The guide distinguishes between two forms of documentation: annual recommendations, which are time-bound and reviewed each year, and the editorial record, which exists independently of any particular edition.

Annual recommendations may change. A place endorsed in one year may not appear in the next. The editorial record, by contrast, is revised rarely and reflects the guide's long-term assessment of what has proven enduring.

    Independence

No place pays for inclusion. No editorial content is sponsored. Commercial links, when present, are disclosed and secondary to the recommendation. Patronage or referral revenue never influences what appears in the guide or how it is described.

For the full governance principles that underpin this publication, see the Editorial Manifesto and Independence & Ethics.

    Authorship

The guide is written by a single editorial voice. It is based on lived experience, repeated return visits, and a commitment to documenting what holds value over time.

Authorship is intentionally understated. The work is meant to stand on its own terms, without reliance on personal narrative or credential.
